Tech Spot:  A Special Referencing Option
with the HS-18
The HS-18 offers customers a unique referencing option.  With an electrode connected to the Animal Ground connection on an EIB-18 (or compatible adapter), the HS-18 provides both an Animal Ground reference and a buffered Animal Ground reference to the system. Selecting HSxxRef2 in the Properties window of Cheetah utilizes this buffered Animal Ground as the reference.
In the Acquisition Entities and Display Properties window, select the drop-down menu next to the "References" option.  This will provide you with all reference options available to the system.  (Note:  HSxxRef3 and HSxxRef4 are not valid reference options with the HS-18.)  In this menu, choose "Headstage xxx Reference 2" to use the buffered Animal Ground.

The buffered Animal Ground option on the HS-18 has the potential to provide a better reference than unbuffered Animal Ground.  This buffered ground produces a cleaner signal because of a higher common mode rejection than unbuffered Animal Ground.  Standard Neuralynx headstages buffer each of the recording channels passed into the acquisition systems.
