TECHNICAL TIP OF THE
DAY - Properly Connecting & Disconnecting Animals from
Headstages
by: Casey
Stengel
A couple of customers have inquired about the proper steps to connect/disconnect
animals to/from the headstage. Most users connect/disconnect the
headstage to/from the animal (EIB) but, due to some custom headgear
designs some customers must first connect/disconnect the tether from
the headstage. Here are a couple of notes and procedures.
When disconnecting the Headstage from the Animal's EIB you may have the
headstage powered ON or OFF. When a headstage is powered ON the
leakage current from the inputs is in the picoamp range and will not
cause any excessive current flow thru the electrodes. Most users
make the Headstage/EIB connection first and then power ON the
headstage. This is preferred because both the Digital Lynx and
the ERP-27 will apply both power supplies (+/- 5v)
simultaneously. Each system contains circuitry that will prevent
applying power if one of the supplies is missing or too low.
If you need to disconnect the tether connection from the headstage
(between the recording system or commutator and the headstage) ALWAYS
turn the headstage power OFF when making/breaking this
connection. This is because the two power supplies (+/-5v) CAN
NOT be disconnected simultaneously when performed by hand. This
can cause excessive leakage current down the electrode for a very short
duration, but it does not take much leakage current to damage cells
around an electrode tip.
Always wear a ground wrist strap when handling the animals for
connection/disconnection to avoid cell damage due to static discharge
built up on your body!
Also note, there is no risk of harm/damage to the electrodes/tissue if
the headstage is powered ON and the animal disconnects it's EIB from
the Headstage (bungee jumping or from shaking).
