TECHNICAL TIP OF THE DAY
- Driver Setup for Windows XP
by: Brian
Ruth
Windows
XP systems require a special driver setting in order to achieve the
best performance with multiple monitors. The NVIDIA drivers have multiple
modes of multi-screen operation. The default mode is Dual View, which
treats each of the monitors as a separate display. This presents a
problem for graphics intensive programs like Cheetah. If you have any
plot windows (Time, Video or Spike) on your non-primary monitor, the
Windows driver will actually slow down the graphics performance of your
system.
When using two monitors, you can set your graphics driver to use
Horizontal Span mode. In this mode, Windows treats both monitors as a
single display, thus eliminating the need to slow down your system.
Now, if you are using three or more monitors, Horizontal Span mode will
only speed up graphics performance on the two monitors connected to the
first graphics card. If you move a plot window to your third or fourth
monitor, you will notice that Cheetah will slow down. You can, however,
place normal windows (Properties, System status, Events, etc.) on the
other monitors with no ill effects.
To Switch to Horizontal Span:
- Right Click on your
Desktop and select "NVIDIA Control Panel". If you do not
see NVIDIA Control Panel, download and install the
latest drivers from NVIDIA's website.
- If you have never run the NVIDIA Control Panel, you
may need to select a settings mode. Select "Advanced
Settings".
- Under the "Display" entry on the left hand side
of the NVIDIA Control Panel, select "Set up multiple
displays."
- On the right side, under "Choose the nView
display mode to use," select "As one large horizontal
desktop (Horizontal span)."
- Close the NVIDIA Control Panel, and select Yes when
asked if you want to apply settings.
If your monitors are mismatched sizes, the drivers will
adjust the resolution on the monitors to use a resolution supported by
both monitors. This may result in some distortion if you are using a
widescreen monitor paired with a standard monitor. This is a limitation
of the drivers under Windows XP.
