tether3MTECHNICAL TIP OF THE DAY

Twisting Tether Extension Cables to Reduce Noise
 by: Casey Stengel

If you have a Commutator or are using more than one headstage and Tether Extension Cable you may see a reduction in external noise (power and other sources) by simply twisting the two Tether Extension Cables together.  Here is the reason why this works.  If one Reference is used for all electrode channels (and the reference runs thru only one of the cables) and the cables are separated then each cable will have different size noise signals induced from the external sources.  By twisting the cables together the amount of noise induced into both cables will be closer to being the same; and the excellent Common Mode Rejection abilities of all Cheetah hardware will allow the noise signals to be cancelled.  Only about 1 twist per meter is required to see a significant reduction.
